3. The New Ship & Chip Trip
A day excursion exploring Matiu/Somes Island, the historic Petone foreshore and Wellington’s fabulous waterfront - only $25.00 per student including lunch.

The day starts at 9am with an education programme at the unique Museum of Wellington (formerly City and Sea); where you’ll gain a fascinating insight into early Wellington harbour.
You’ll board the East by West Ferry at 10 am bound for PetoneWharf where you can stroll along the beachfront to the wonderful PetoneSettlersMuseum. Educators will provide a programme which includes the arrival of colonial settlers and early interaction with Tangata whenua – Maori inhabitants.
Fish and chips are delivered for lunch, courtesy of John’s Fish Market, before the ferry transfers you to MatiuSomesIsland. You’ll be met by Department of Conservation Educators who introduce you to the island’s history and unique flora and fauna.
The ferry operators provide an entertaining harbour commentary on the ride back to Queens Wharf (arr approx 2.00pm) where you’ll be met by Museum staff before exploring the Wharf area where you can find out about its changing role from service area for commerce and sea traffic to recreation and leisure destination.
Payment is required on the day. Minimum group size 35, maximum 80. Duration 8.45 am to 2.45 pm. Recommended for Levels 3 and up.
